STE. GENEVIEVE, MO (KFVS) - Fleur-de-lis bucks have been introduced in Ste. Genevieve to promote shopping this holiday season.

According to Ste. Genevieve Tourism Director Sandra Cabot, a new token is introduced for Downtown Ste. Genevieve shops.

This token is called the Fleur-de-lis. It is a wooden nickel worth $5 and can be purchased at the Ste. Genevieve Tourism Welcome Center starting on November 1.

This new program is designed to encourage people to visit shops and restaurants in the downtown district. All 25 businesses downtown are taking part and the Fleur-de-lis-de-lis bucks can be used to purchase items at these businesses.

The idea came from a local resident that went on a trip down to a town at the Gulf of Mexico.

They had a similar token there and brought it back where Cabot then learned of this program.

It was decided to present the Fleur-de-lis token program at the Tourism Advisory Council on October 20, where it was approved.

The Fleur-de-lis buck was decided on for it is a symbol of Ste. Genevieve and the town's French heritage.

Cabot says they also plan on expanding the Fleur-de-lis bucks to use as a gift card program for the Christmas season.
