Authorities on the lookout for drunk drivers this Halloween

Law enforcement in the Heartland will be on the lookout for drunk drivers on Halloween.

According to the Christian County sheriff's office, it is part of an forceful “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement effort.

They issue this warning, if the Christian County sheriff's office catches you driving over the legal limit you will be arrested.

“Please don't make a mistake that could end your life, or the life of another.” said Sheriff Livy Leavell, Jr. “We want to remind all Christian County drivers that if you've had any alcohol to drink, you cannot drive. There are always other options: a designated, sober driver; a taxi; or public transportation.”

The Carbondale, Illinois Police Department offers these tips to keep safe:

  • Before the Halloween festivities begin, plan a way to safely get home at the end of the night.
  • Always designate a sober driver. If you are impaired, take a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, use public transportation or sleep it off at the party location.
  • Walking impaired can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. Designate a sober friend to walk you home.
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact local law enforcement.

If you know someone who is about to drive or ride after drinking, take their keys and help them make safe travel arrangements to where they are going.

The law enforcement crackdown is funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
