Southeast cyber security student heads to D.C.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Cyber security is a degree and some universities, and apparently is a very popular one.

There's a Southeast Missouri State University student who will be at the White House on Wednesday, Oct. 28 because of it.

Jeff Surmeier has been invited to attend a recognition dinner and round table with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He left on Tuesday morning.

Surmeier, a senior, plans to graduate in December 2015 with a degree in cyber security.

Just how popular is this degree?

At Southeast in 2011, it started with 15 students. Today, it's around 100 participating in the program.

According to Southeast, they launched the degree to address the growing demand for professionals to protect computers and computer networks from assault.
