CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Carbondale Civic Center hosted a social just program on Monday discussing Ferguson protests, the death of Michael Brown, media's role in the protests and law enforcement.

Residents of Carbondale and visitors, some from St. Louis, sat down with the Carbondale police department, journalists, professors and other professionals.

One audience member, a childhood friend of Michael Brown, said being more proactive as a community needs to happen.

"I feel that we need to sit down as people, as a unit and not necessarily race versus race," Kayce Gibbs said. "And come up with a strategic plan that says this will not happen again.”

The open discussion concluded with an emphasis on action steps to create more open dialogue within the community.
