SCOTT CITY, MO (KFVS) -

A Steele, Mo. native and former teammate of Oscar Taveras remembered the St. Louis Cardinal on Monday.

Taveras and his girlfriend, Edilia Arvelo, were killed in a car crash in the Dominican Republic on Sunday, according to reports.

Regarded as one of the top prospects in Major League Baseball, the 22 year old made his debut for the Cardinals in May.

"Just the experience playing with him. He was an upbeat-tempo kind of guy," Jeremy Patton said. "He always brought some energy to the field he was always laughing, joking, having a good time."

Patton, of Steele, Mo., played side by side with Taveras in the spring of 2012. At the time, both played for the Cardinals High-A league affiliate team, the Palm Springs Cardinals, in Jupiter Florida.

"When he stepped in the box he had that presence about himself," Patton said. "You knew he was going to be in the big leagues."

Taveras played 80 games with the Cardinals this season racking up 56 hits and three home runs, including one that brought the Cardinals back in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series.

It was that explosive potential at the plate that made Taveras so fun to watch.

Now, his death leaves a void felt by fans, players and teammates alike.

"Cardinal Nation as a whole, it's a sad loss, for the fans, the team," Patton said.
