UNION COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Union County State's Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds says a former southern Illinois man has been sentenced to more than 50 years for sex crimes. He's also a former church pastor.
Billy Wayne Vandergraph, 76, of formerly of rural Alto Pass, Illinois has been committed to the Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS) for 51 years.
Vandergraph was indicted by a Union County grand jury in July of 2010 on one count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, a class x felony, and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, both class 2 felonies.
According to Edmonds, after Vandergraph was found to be unfit to stand trial, evidence was presented at a discharge hearing in September 2013.
At that hearing, the court found that the evidence showed that the defendant committed acts of sexual conduct with a child under 13 years of age between January and May of 2010.
And, that evidence would have been sufficient to convict Vandergraph had he been fit to stand trial.
The Illinois sex offender registry website says the victim was 5-years-old.
He is now required to register as a sex offender and will be placed in a locked facility within the DHS system.
Vandergraph is currently being held in the custody of the Union County sheriff at the Jackson County Jail in Murphysboro, awaiting transfer to DHS.
The Illinois State Sex Offender registry says he had been living in Park Hills, Missouri.
The case was investigated the Union County Sheriff's Office and Illinois State Police.
