MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) -

A convicted sex offender is behind bars for allegedly attending a Halloween event at which children were present.

According to Murphysboro Police, 41-year-old Thomas J. Allen, listed as a sexual predator on the Illinois Sex Offender Registry, was spotted inside Riverside Park as a haunted hayride event was under way.

Police responded to the park around 11:20 p.m. Saturday when several witnesses said they spotted Allen inside the park.

Police later caught up with Allen and arrested him for violating Sex Offender Registry stipulations.

According to Illinois Compiled Statute, it is unlawful for a child sex offender to participate in a holiday event involving children under 18 years of age.

Illinois law also states that it is unlawful for a child sex offender to loiter within 500 feet of a public park while persons under the age of 18 are present.

According to the Illinois Sex Offender Registry, Allen committed predatory criminal sexual assault on a four-year-old child. Allen was reportedly 23 years old at the time of the offense.

Allen is currently being held in the Jackson County Jail on the new registration violation charges.
