SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) -

Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter says a Sikeston man in custody at the county jail has been charged with the assault of a corrections officer.

Terriante Maurice McClinton, 23, has been charged with the Class C felony of assault of a corrections officer, and the class B misdemeanor of property damage in the second degree.

Sheriff Walter says McClinton was already in custody at the Scott County Jail, waiting to be taken to the Missouri Department of Corrections, when on Thursday, Sergeant Brant Pratt was called to the jail to investigate the assault.

According to the investigation by Sergeant Pratt, Corrections Officer Sierra Sides and Corrections Officer Kindal McCall were performing their duties in one of the jail housing pods.

Sides was speaking with McClinton, an inmate in the facility, when the inmate struck the side of the officer's face, grabbing her prescription glasses, and purposefully bent them until broken, according to the sheriff.

The sheriff says Sergeant Pratt observed a contusion and swelling to the left upper side of the corrections officer's face.

Sides was taken to an area hospital where she was treated and released.

The sheriff says when asked by Sergeant Pratt if he was willing to discuss the incident, McClinton said “No, it won't do me any good.”

Sheriff Walter says that he is proud of the professional way the corrections staff, and especially Corrections Officer Sides handled the incident.
