Sheriff: Scott City man arrested after police chase

SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter says a Scott City man is facing charges after a chase.

Matthew Angel Lowe, 38, was charged with driving while revoked/suspended, resisting arrest by fleeing and creating a substantial risk of serious injury or death to any person, operating a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner, fail to drive on the right half of the road when the road was of sufficient width, exceeding the posted speed limit by 25 miles per hour or more and fail to stop for a stop sign.

According to Sheriff Walter, on Thursday, Oct. 23 around 1:34 a.m., a deputy was using a radar on State Highway M at Wheeler Drive in Scott City, Mo. The deputy saw a vehicle going west that appeared to be driving faster than the posted 35 mile per hour speed limit, at 73 miles per hour.

The deputy tried to pull the vehicle over, but said the white Pontiac Firebird didn't stop and sped up at 105 miles per hour on Route M between Scott City and Chaffee.

Sheriff Walter said the car then crossed the center line and drove in the wrong lane several times during the chase.

He said the deputy continued to follow the car, which entered Chaffee going 80 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour speed zone.

The car didn't stop at a four-way stop sign in Chaffee at the intersection of Route M (North Main) and Route A (Yoakum Avenue) with the car sliding sideways, Sheriff Walter said.

He said the car then headed east on Route A toward New Hamburg and continued to speed at 95 miles per hour between Chaffee and New Hamburg. It then drove 70 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour speed zone in New Hamburg.

The car then failed to stop for another stop sign on Route A and headed back east toward U.S. Highway 61. It also didn't stop at a stop sign at Route A and Highway 61 and headed north on Highway 61.

Sheriff Walter said the car was exceeding the posted 55 mile per hour speed limit at 105 miles per hour at it went north on Highway 61.

He said the Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted with stopping the car south of Kelso on Highway 61 by using spike strips. The car came to a stop in the middle of the road near 27823 U.S. Highway 61.

According to Sheriff Walter, Lowe got out of the car and ran west behind a home.

He said Lowe was chased, but ignored commands to stop.

Sheriff Walter said Lowe ran for some distance and finally stopped in a cow pasture, cursed and implored the deputy to shoot him.

Lowe was arrested without a struggle.

Sheriff Walter said Lowe told deputies he ran because it was a rush and his driver's license was revoked.

Lowe was taken to the Scott County Jail. His bond was set at $1,500 cash only.
