SIU leaders reevaluate campus safety

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Incidents over the last couple of weeks have forced SIU Carbondale leaders to reevaluate their campus safety plans.

Interim Chancellor Dr. Paul Sarvela says he and a committee made up of city officials, students and staff looked at ways to improve surveillance on campus.

Dr. Sarvela says the university will hire three additional public safety officers, invest more in lighting the campus and work with the schools Saluki Patrol, which is a group of 40 or so criminal justice students.

He says they are aware of some "trouble spots" on campus and certain times of the day where issues have turned up.

This is an ongoing effort that is effecting universities all over the state.
