CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

The SIU Black Law Student Association hosted a day of action vigil on Wednesday, Oct. 22 honoring people who have lost their lives at the hands of law enforcement.

Students wore shirts stating “black lives matter” with their hands up, remembering the young black man Michael Brown, who was shot on Aug. 9 by a white police officer.

Law students like Willie Lyles III, say although there is a lot more work that needs to be done, they are optimistic about the future.

“I think we could make a difference,” Lyles said. “I think what we're focusing on now is not necessarily new legislation, not necessarily new initiative, but we have change the hearts and minds of people so that they value my life as much as I value theirs.”

Lyles said he hopes more people will continue to fight for justice and peace.
