Murphysboro school board approves school consolidation

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - The Murphysboro, Illinois School Board voted and approved a school consolidation on Tuesday night, Oct. 21.

The board passed the consolidation in a six to one decision. Only one board member voted "no."

Superintendent Chris Grode proposed combining both elementary schools into two attendance centers, which would mean housing all kindergarten through second grade students in one building and third through fifth grade students in another.

More than 50 people attended the meeting.

Dylan Miley, a senior at Murphysboro High School said the board made the right decision.

"I think it was a good decision," Miley said.  "Although I was surprised more teachers didn't come out to say why they wanted it or didn't want it."

The proposal drew both support and criticism.

The board will now begin preparing a plan as to how the schools will consolidate.

There is no word yet on how much the consolidations might cost.

The change is expected to take place next year.
