CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A sports website has named a former Southeast Missouri State University outfielder the St. Louis Cardinals top first-year minor league position player.

Derek Gibson was drafted by the Cardinals as a non-drafted free agent in June.

The site, scout.com, chose 10 rookie candidates for consideration of the honor. Of the 10 on the list, Gibson led them all in slugging percentage and on-base plus slugging.

Gibson's slugging percentage was .477 and OPS was .880. He hit .318 and drove in 25 runs in 44 games.

Gibson played the majority of his games with the Gulf Coast League Cardinals, rookie affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.

He was promoted to the Cardinals Class-A Advanced affiliate, the Palm Beach Cardinals at the end of the GCL season.
