Three people were arrested after a crowd flipped a car on its roof early Sunday morning during Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) students are calling "Unofficial Halloween."

Saergant Cory Kemp with the Carbondale Police Department says the incident happened near South Ash Street in Carbondale.

Nicole Lowden, a grad student at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, says she watched the car being flipped in Carbondale.

“It was insane, there was a ton of people, just screaming and chanting," Lowden said. "And throwing stuff and just drunk people everywhere.”

Lowden says the crowd was shouting "S-I-U, S-I-U," as they flipped a vehicle on its roof.

Lowden says Carbondale police responded wearing riot gear, shortly after the car was flipped. She says the crowd threw beer bottles at officers but dispersed shortly after.

At least eight Illinois State Police officers responded to the area to maintain peace but left shortly after.

Heartland News sent a crew to the scene just after 2 a.m. Sunday morning.

Our crew reports that there were large crowds of young adults in Halloween costumes in the area.
