Hot air balloons soar over Southern Illinois festival

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The 2nd annual Balloons over Mt. Vernon was held this weekend in Southern Illinois.

15 hot air balloons and their pilots came to Mt. Vernon this weekend from Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa.

The event was held coinciding with Mt. Vernon, Illinois' fall harvest festival.

The event was organized by Mt. Vernon hot air balloon pilot Jennifer Witzel.

Witzel says she organized the event to share hot air balloon culture with people in the Heartland.

“It brings out the smiles on people's faces," Witzel said. "How can you look at a big balloon…. You think of a birthday and happy feelings and that sort of thing.”

Several pilots are offering hot air balloon rides through Sunday. A ride will take you about 100 feet in the air and then set you back down on the ground. Cost per ticket is $10.
