CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

One man was killed in an apartment fire Friday morning, according to Battalion Chief Brad Dillow with the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.

Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton says 68-year-old Russell Whitworth appears to have died from smoke inhalation but Clifton is waiting on more tests before an official ruling will be made.

According to Dillow, the fire marshal is still on the scene investigating the cause of the fire, but it is not believed to be suspicious.

The apartment is located in a building at the intersection of Brookshire Road and Cape Rock Drive.

There were no other injuries or deaths reported, according to officials. The fire was contained to a small area and did not spread to other apartments.
