West Frankfort students join millions for statewide 'Great Shakeout' drill

WEST FRANKFORT, IL (KFVS) - Millions of Illinois students had to “Drop, Cover and Hold on” during the biggest emergency exercise in the state and U.S. history on Thursday morning.

At West Frankfort Intermediate School, third grade students participated in the 4th Annual Great ShakeOut earthquake drill.

During the drill students learned what to do if the ground starts shaking.

“If I was in class I would get under my desk, stop, drop, and hold on,” said third grader Courtney Cash.

“You cover you head and you stay still without talking,” said third grader Chris Tapia.

Governor Pat Quinn proclaimed Oct. 16 as “Great ShakeOut Day,” calling this drill “an effective, grass-roots approach to emergency planning.”

Most of southern Illinois sits atop one of two major fault zones, the New Madrid Seismic Zone and Wabash Valley Seismic Zone, but earthquakes have been felt throughout the state.
