Mt. Vernon apartment complex fire deemed suspicious, under investigation

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - A fire at an apartment complex late Tuesday night is being investigated as suspicious, according to the Mt. Vernon Fire Department.

Crews were called to the scene near the intersection of South 9th Street and Cleveland Street just after 10:30 p.m., according to Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Sargent, and it took three fire departments and more than an hour to put out.

No injuries were reported, Sargent said. The Jefferson Fire Protection District and Waltonville Fire Department's were called in for additional support.

Sargent said the apartment building that caught fire was being lived in, although it was surrounded by several abandoned apartment buildings.

The fire consumed the two apartment units on the left side of the building and caused smoke damage to other units, according to Sargent.

The Mt. Vernon Fire Department is now investigating the fire as suspicious.
