River levels stall retrieving car in river near New Madrid

NEW MADRID, MO (KFVS) -

New Madrid police are investigating after fishermen found a car in the Mississippi River recently during a fishing tournament.

According to New Madrid Police Chief Joey Higgerson, some fishermen were fishing on the river during the Bass Pro Shops Big Cat Quest Tournament in New Madrid and saw the car in the water while using sonar equipment to search for fish.

He said the car is located near a boat ramp south of New Madrid.

Higgerson said they are working with the New Madrid County Sheriff's Department and Missouri Highway Patrol.

High river levels have stalled retrieving the vehicle in the Mississippi River in New Madrid, Missouri.

That's according to New Madrid Police Department Chief of Police Joey Higgerson.

Higgerson says the dive team felt that the safest route was to wait for river conditions to stabilize, to reevaluate and attempt a dive at a later date.

The chief says the Missouri Highway Patrol dive team leader said the team would return to the search area when conditions were safe to make arrangements for a second dive.

Higgerson met with Sheriff Terry Stevens about the situation and both agreed that the dive team leader's recommendation was the best option.

Higgerson says the dive team will complete the task soon.

Barbara Stoffer, 83, from New Madrid, went missing in August 2013. The Missouri State Highway Patrol and crews from several cities searched for her or her vehicle throughout the county by air, water and ground.

Higgerson said at this point he doesn't know if this is Barbara Stoffer's car.
