CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A memorial dedication was held on Monday afternoon in Cape Girardeau County Park North to honor the late Roger Fields.

Fields was the assistant chief at the Cape Girardeau Police Department, serving 26 years.

He died earlier this year due to medical conditions.

The Seniors and Lawmen Together council hosted the program, unveiling a reflection bench and a rock in memory of Fields at the Law Enforcement Memorial in Cape County North.

The council stated they represent Fields steadfastness and integrity.

People in the community say the former assistant chief was bigger than life.

"His phrase was living the dream," Chris Vaught, a friend of Fields said. "He woke up every morning always living the dream and putting other people first."

Vaught said he hopes other law enforcement officers will emulate the passion Fields had for his community.
