New Missouri gun laws take effect Friday

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Missouri lawmakers expanded the option for approved staff members to bring guns to schools.

That is just one of the provisions to the new laws that will allow Missourians to openly carry firearms.

The law will allow specially trained school employees to carry concealed guns on campuses with the department of public safety creating the training guidelines.

Schools will have the final say on whether firearms actually end up in the classroom, the law just makes it an option.

This makes Missouri the 10th state to allow school employees to be armed since the Sandy Hook shooting.

The new gun laws will also impact where you can carry guns openly.

Some communities in Missouri have ordinances against open carry.

However, Heartland city leaders say those ordinances will have to be changed.

Cape Girardeau City attorney Eric Cunningham says he is already working to make Cape Girardeau's ordinance comply with the new state law.

He says he hopes this issue is brought up at the next city council meeting.

"I was working on that ordinance for possible changes and sent them to the chief of police and others to look at," Cunningham said. "We need to make sure our ordinance is constant with the new state law."

The age to obtain a concealed weapons permit also will be lowered from 21 to 19 under the new law.
