ANNA, IL (KFVS) - An elementary school principal has been placed on administrative leave after being charged with drug possession.

Anthony Rinella, an assistant principal the Anna District 37 schools, has been charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance, according to Union County, Ill. court documents.

Rinella has since been placed on administrative leave, pending investigation, according to a statement released by Anna District 37 superintendent Chuck Goforth.

“We are of course concerned by these troubling allegations,” Goforth said in a statement.

The school district's web site lists Rinella as an assistant principal at the junior high school and as athletics director.

Goforth stated that the district will comment no further on Rinella's arrest. Goforth stated the matter is now confidential due to personnel reasons.

“The safety and security of our students is the foremost priority of the District,” Goforth said in a statement.

Rinella was arrested October 7 and has since been released from the Union County Sheriff's Department after posting a $500 bond.

The crime is punishable by one to three years in prison, according to the Illinois General Assembly.

Rinella scheduled to appear in court on November 18.
