CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Hundreds of doctors, nurses, friends, family, and cancer survivors came together Wednesday for the Pink Up luncheon.

Supporters say the lunch is important to help bring awareness to breast cancer and raise money for the Dig for Life program that provides mammograms for area women and men who otherwise could not afford one.

It's all part of the breast cancer awareness month of October.

Michelle Scherer was diagnosed with breast cancer this year.

She's also been an oncology nurse and worked with cancer patients for years.

She says this lunch is a nice way for survivors get together and see their doctors and nurses outside of the hospital setting.

"We can see each other and kind of catch up on our families and what's going on in your life and what you've been doing since you finished chemo two years ago five years ago, or whatever so it's kind of nice," said Scherer.

Scherer hopes people see the survivors at events like Wednesday's lunch and realize you can survive and breast cancer isn't a death sentence.

Everyone says the biggest take away from the event is to remind women to get their annual mammograms.
