POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The Poplar Bluff Cheer Squad took home the 4A large school state championship title for the second straight year in a row.

Poplar Bluff students and staff stood outside Monday morning, applauding the athletes as they arrived to school.

Coach Stephanie Hillis helped bring the team to victory for the past two years and she says she couldn't believe it.

"Last year was the first year ever in Poplar Bluff history for cheerleading to win first," Hillis said. "And then to do it two years in a row? It's unreal."

Senior cheerleader Mallory Dye says winning this championship means the world to her.

"I mean the girls are like my sisters," Dye said. "Just to be out on the floor competing with them and just to win is incredible."

Dye says the support of the community, coaches, and friends have helped her team a lot.

"It's absolutely incredible just to have them behind us the whole way," Dye said.

Athletic Director Keith Kent says to be able to repeat in anything is a big deal.

"I'm very proud of them, and just to get two is just awesome," Kent said.

Last year, the Poplar Bluff cheer squad reinstated its competition cheer squad and became state champions for the first time in school history.
