UNION COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Traffic on Interstate 57 in Union County was slowed after a crash between two semi trucks on Monday, Oct. 6.

According to Illinois State Police, two semis crashed on I-57 northbound near the 38 mile post around 12:29 p.m.

They say a red 2014 Freightliner pulling a semi trailer was going north in the right hand lane. A blue 2010 Kenworth pulling a semi trailer was also going north in the right hand lane, in front of the red semi.

Police say the red semi, driven by 36-year-old Philip D. Leech of Marion, Ind., failed to reduce his speed and hit the rear of the blue semi trailer.

They say Leech crossed the left driving lane and came to a rest in the center median of I-57.

Both drivers were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

One northbound lane of I-57 was closed for a few hours due to the crash and cleanup.

Leech was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
