Police in Carbondale track crime with maps

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The month of September for Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) was full of violent crimes that happened both on and off campus.

Crimes on and near campus in September include sexual assaults, resisting a police officer after a large scale downtown fight,

Two students were arrested on campus on September 12 for criminal sexual assault.

Four students were arrested on campus on September 13 for criminal sexual assault.

Two students were arrested off campus for disturbing or resisting a peace officer in a large downtown Carbondale disturbance on September 20.

One person was attacked by six people in the center of SIUC campus on September 30. Two non-students were arrested in connection with that attack.

"Carbondale is a pretty dangerous area," SIUC student Demetrio Brown said. Like a mini Chicago almost. And it's not supposed to be like that."

SIUC student Andrew Dropik says local police could do more.

"There's a reason they're bold. And I believe that's because there's not people trying to stop them"

"Local police are more interested in revenue generation through drinking tickets and parking tickets than they are patrolling and keeping incidents like this from happening," Dropik said.

The Carbondale Police Department maps crimes that have happened using a website called CrimeReports.com. The website shows the types of crimes and where they happened over 30 days.

SIUC Police posts a daily log of crimes and shows 60 days of crimes.
