CAIRO, IL (KFVS) -

A Illinois community honored the lives of two bank workers killed in an attempted robbery earlier this year.

Anita Grace of Olive Branch and Nita Smith of Wickliffe each had a memorial bench dedicated to them today.

Dozens turned out for the unveiling in downtown Cairo.

Supporters say the memorial shows how well the community came together in the wake of tragedy.

"It helps heal the hurt that was caused here because it was detrimental to our community," said Cairo library director Monica Smith. "We've had so many obstacles to over come and this is just one more. We just want something positive to come out of this."

Community members also planted and dedicated a buckeye tree to the surviving victim of the May robbery.

James Watts of Cairo is charged in that case.

His trial is set to start in December.
