CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) -

The Charleston community gathered on Oct. 3 at multiple locations to cheer on the CHS cheerleaders headed to state.

At Hearnes Elementary and A.D. Simpson Schools, students lined the driveway holding handmade signs and props. They stopped to receive support from Charleston Middle School before heading down Main Street. From there, they were Columbia-bound.

Coach Megan Williams said they "have worked hard to get to this point." This is Coach Williams' fifth year as cheerleading coach, and is the team's first competition year in Charleston R-1 history.

In July, the CHS cheerleaders entered in the MCCA St. Louis Regional Competition and won first place in the 1A Large Division.

This earned them an invitation to participate in the State Cheer Championship in Columbia, Mo.
