Enterovirus: what you need to know

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have confirmed nearly 500 cases of the enterovirus.

The reports have taken place in Illinois, Kentucky and Missouri among other states.

Experts say the true number of cases is likely much higher, since only a fraction of patients suspected of having the infection have been tested.

We learned that symptoms include mild to severe respiratory distress. Doctors say children with pre-existing lung conditions like asthma are most at risk.

Doctors say if the fever doesn't go away after a few days, it might be time to seek medical treatment.

In order to prevent it, experts suggest frequent hand washing, disinfecting surfaces like toys, and keeping sick children home from school.
