Hwy. 34 South in Saline Co. back open after deadly crash

SALINE COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

Illinois Route 34 in Saline County, Illinois is back open after a deadly crash on Thursday, Oct. 2.

According to the preliminary investigation by Illinois State Police, around 3:10 p.m. Donald R. Childers, 73, of Marion, Ill., was driving a maroon 2001 Dodge Durango northbound on Illinois Route 34, about 1/4 mile  north of Womble Road in Saline County, when he swerved to miss a slower moving vehicle in the road.

Police say Childers lost control of the vehicle on the wet pavement. The vehicle left the road and hit a tree.

Donald Childers was pronounced dead at the scene by the Saline County Coroner's Office.

His passengers, 27-year-old David Grace and 68-year-old Betty J. Childers, both of Marion, Ill., were taken by ambulance to an area hospital for injuries from the crash.

Betty J. Childers was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police say the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
