2 of 6 suspects arrested in connection with attack on SIU campus

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Department of Public Safety says two of the six suspects in an attack on campus have been arrested.

Police say the attack happened on the east side of the Agriculture Building. One person was injured.

That person was medically treated and released.

The attack happened just after 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to police, the arrested suspects are not affiliated with the university.

The SIUC Department of Safety issued an e-mail to all students notifying them of the attack.

“It's crazy, senseless, I don't think it should be happening at all," SIU student Kemar Jones said,

SIU students who spoke with Heartland News Wednesday said they believe the university could do more to notify students of the attacks.

“I hear a bunch about a huge deal of sexual assaults," said first year SIU student Ellen Lechman, "And we never got told about it or any kind of e-mails and that was upsetting.”

Lechman said she will rethink where she goes after night.

“There was the dogs night out thing and I was like oh, I'll go to that – Wait it starts at 8, and I don't want to walk on that path at night alone.”

The suspects were described as black men between the ages of 19 and 22, approximately 5 feet, 10 inches to 6 feet tall.

One suspect was wearing dark shorts, a dark hoodie and white shoes. The second suspect was wearing dark pants, a dark t-shirt, dark shoes and had shoulder-length hair. The third suspect was wearing light-colored pants, a dark hoodie with writing on the front and dark shoes. Suspect four was wearing jeans, a dark-colored shirt with a white logo and a baseball hat. The fifth suspect was wearing camouflage pants, a dark shirt, dark shoes and had shoulder-length hair. The sixth suspect was wearing dark shorts, a dark shirt and white shoes.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
