Vandals target Marion park

MARION, IL (KFVS) - Over the weekend, vandals spray painted the outside walls and playgrounds at Marion Junior High and Longfellow Elementary.

The school district said that damage has since been cleaned up, but those locations weren't the only places to get hit.

The Marion Park District staff has their own mess to deal with after someone tagged the inside of the bathrooms and damaged some of the property at Ashley Park.

Graffiti can be found on the mirrors, toilets and walls of both the women's and men's bathroom.

Along with some major scrubbing, Jack Reed with the city's Park District said they'll have to replace a broken door.

Reed said he sees this type of problem happen more and more around Halloween.

Neighbors we talked to say it happens too often and call it aggravating.

“I've seen people break benches be very suspicious around the bathroom. I don't think parents wants to see stuff like this written on the glass and curse words and profanity,” Kevin Kloeck.

There are curfews in place; however, this incident happened during open hours.

The city is working on installing more security cameras and upgrading their current ones.

To cap it off, the money to clean up and repair the doors is money coming out of the park district's pocket.

Reed said if this rash of vandalism continues, an insurance claim will be filed.

The Marion Police has not commented on whether the two crimes are related.
