Cape Girardeau sheriff's office warns of 'scam'

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Office is warning the public about what they're calling a phone scam.

According to the sheriff's office, some residents were receiving phone calls on Thursday evening from what appeared to be a Potosi, Mo. phone number.

The caller said they were either a deputy sheriff with the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Office, using a real deputy name, and/or said they were acting under the authority of Judge Gary Kamp.

According to the sheriff's office, the caller would say the victim had missed jury duty and they were going to be arrested if they did not pay a fine of random amounts. They were instructed to pay be credit card, or get a prepaid credit card from a retail store, and call them back with the information.

The sheriff's office said this is a scam. The sheriff's office, police departments or any court will not call you by phone requesting payment of fines in this manner.
