SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) -

The American Legion's 70th Annual Cotton Carnival begins Tuesday September 23 in Sikeston, Missouri.

The carnival will be held at the Sikeston Jaycee's Bootheel Rodeo Grounds on North Ingram Road.

The carnival has several rides and games for both children and adults.

Saturday, the city will host the Cotton Carnival Parade. It begins at 10 a.m.

Sikeston DPS says they will have extra people on hand to help with the parade.

According to DPS, at 9 a.m., officers will shut down streets where the parade will run, but Pine Street will shut down at 8:30 a.m. for parade line up.

This year's route will start at the Sikeston High School Field House. It will go north on Pine Street to Malone Ave., west to Scott Street, and then the parade will disband in the vacant parking lots west of Scott Street.

Participants of the parade are asked to assemble at 9:00 am, those in the front of the parade may need to be there earlier. The staging area should be entered from South Main, as other streets will be closed.

The staging for the parade:

  • Miss Sikeston / Miss Cotton Carnival Contestants - Field House Parking Lot
  • Queens, Kings, Royalty from surrounding towns - Field House Parking Lot American Legion Line up - Greer Street at Pine (facing east)
  • Dignitaries/Political Candidates (Democrats) - Matthews at Pine (facing east)

Participants of the parade will not be allowed to throw candy to spectators. All candy must be given out by hand, due to safety issues.

In addition, the American Legion organizers "are not allowing independent vehicles" to take part in the parade this year.

DPS says some people in the past have driven in the parade with no purpose or reason to be involved. Those who have not gained prior permission from the Legion organizers will be told to exit the parade line up.
