Heartland doctor recommends qualified patients for medical marijuana

MARION, IL (KFVS) - It's now possible for Illinois resident to apply for medical marijuana, if your last name starts with the letters "A" through "L."

If you're one of the thousands of patients who hopped online on Tuesday to apply for a medical marijuana card, there are some things you still have to do before you fill out the paperwork.

Having a doctor recommend you is requirement and it is not as simple as scheduling one trip to the doctor office.

"It is very difficult to find a physician that has anything positive to say about medical cannabis," said the manager of Pied Pfeifer Compassionate Care Clinic, Stephanie Dalton

The staff at Pied Pfeifer Compassionate Care Clinic in Marion, Ill. said the number of patients they treat has doubled from two years ago.

"It is because they don't have physician or they feel uncomfortable with or they know that their physician is not doing the medical cannabis certification,” she said.

Dalton said some patients travel up to four hours to be treated by Dr. Bodo Schneider.

Dr. Schneider is in favor of recommending medical cannabis for those qualified patients.

"It is super effective, it is more effective than most of the prescription medicines for pain and nausea," said Dr. Schneider.

But a recommendation can't be made with one doctor visit.

Dr. Schneider, and all other doctors who support the drug will require you be a patient of his for at least six months.

He said it will be another year before any prescription is written, but that doesn't mean procrastinate.

"If you're thinking of doing it the advice is, get started now," he said.

Dr. Schneider travels back and forth from his office in Marion to an office in Chicago.

He plans of expanding his office hours due to the boom in recent patients.

And if you apply, authorities will also conduct a background check on every qualified application.

Applications to open a dispensary will begin being accepted on Monday.
