Quinn announces opening of Algonquin bypass

Posted: Updated:

ALGONQUIN, Ill. (AP) - Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has announced that the Algonquin bypass will be opening Sept. 4 after three years of construction on the project.

The bypass is a new, four-lane segment of Illinois Route 31 that aims to increase mobility in and around the Fox Valley area. The majority of the $88.5 million project was paid for by the state, with $22 million coming from federal funding. The state portion of the project is funded through a $31 billion capital construction program passed by the Legislature in 2009. It was largely paid for through legalizing video poker, raising taxes on candy, liquor and beauty products and privatizing the Illinois lottery.

Quinn says the project supported more than 1,000 jobs and will improve transportation efficiency throughout the region, benefiting residents and businesses.
