LEADWOOD, MO (KFVS) -

Mayor Dennis Parks confirms that Leadwood, Missouri Police Chief Dale Newman died Wednesday night of an apparent heart attack.

Chief Newman was 47-years-old.

Newman was named police chief in 2012. Parks says Newman was a great role model for the officers of the police department as well as citizens of Leadwood.

"I would like for them to remember him as a chief that cared about the city," Mayor Parks said.

He has two girls and was living in Ste. Genevieve.

His law enforcement career has taken him all across southeast Missouri.

Newman worked as an officer in Cape Girardeau and also Ste. Genevieve.

The mayor said that Newman wasn't feeling well Tuesday when the two had spoken.

Parks calls it a real loss to the community - saying Newman was a great guy. The city is flying the flag out front of the Police Department and City Hall at half-staff in honor of Newman.

"He will be missed by the city and also the police department," Parks said.

Parks also says Newman was instrumental in helping the police department get needed equipment. He says the department will be getting two new police cars in the near future and he gives Newman the credit for making that possible.

Leadwood is in St. Francois County, Missouri.
