Sikeston kindergarten serves breakfast in the classroom

Posted: Updated:

We all know breakfast is an important meal, especially for our kids. That's why Sikeston kindergarten teachers are taking that part of the day into their own hands by making breakfast a part of class time.

Every morning at Sikeston Kindergarten Center, they turn the classroom into the cafeteria. Teachers say it gets their students' days started out right. It turns out, kids like it too.

When Pam Lowe's kindergarten students get to the classroom, breakfast is the first thing on the schedule.

Lowe said eating a good, healthy breakfast everyday makes all the difference for her students.

"It's hard to teach students when they're hungry because that's all they're worried about,” Lowe said.

Now, with this program, every student's belly gets full, right after the bell rings to start school.

Principal Jenny Hobeck said the school had the program in place for part of last school year.

"Last year was an experimental phase, to see how it would go over. It tied in real well with our character and positive behavior support program, tying into manners, making these kids become independent,” Hobeck said.

Lowe said the free breakfast program is helpful not only for student learning, but also for their morning routine at home.

"It helps the parents too because they don't have to worry about getting up and getting breakfast, they just send them to school and we take care of that for them,” Lowe said.

School must follow national standards for the school lunch program. The same goes for breakfast. Teachers say the breakfast menu is also in agreement with national healthy food requirements.
