LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The grand champion ham at the Kentucky State Fair has been purchased for a record price.

The ham from Broadbent Farms was purchased by Republic Bank, Hermitage Farm and Bridgeman Foods who combined to pay $2 million for it.

The auction was held during the 51st annual Kentucky Ham Breakfast where the bidding on the ham wasn't the only thing that was hot - so were the politics. Senate Candidate Alison Grimes recent focus on Mitch McConnell missing Senate Agriculture Committee meetings isn't worrying him. McConnell says he was busy writing the bill.

"The farm bill recently was written by the conferees that I appointed and with my provision they put the hemp provision in there," McConnell said. "So I think it's much more important to be crafting the bill than to be in hearings that may be unrelated."

Grimes has been under heat too for the possible campaign finance violation in renting a bus owned by her father's company. As for filing a complaint to the election commission, McConnell said they'll have to wait and see as facts unfold.

Grimes didn't seem down or worried saying the campaign and support are strong.

“We have energy and excitement and it's going great," Grimes said, "And the momentum is behind this campaign to pull us across the finish line successfully."

Both say they're looking forward to the debate on KET in October.
