CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration unveiled its new search tool to find out if a recalled car still needs to be repaired.

Using this new tool, drivers are looking to see if their car was impacted by a recall or if they are in the market for a new car can find out if a vehicle has any safety concerns.

Drivers simply need to enter their vehicle identification number into the search box at safecar.gov.

During 2014, more than 46 million vehicles in the United States were recalled for things like faulty ignition switches or brakes.

According to Roger Austin, owner of Advanced Automotive in Cape Girardeau, most drivers that come into his shop aren't aware of a recall on their car.

"If we are doing a repair or diagnosing a vehicle we identify that there's an issue we suspect an recall issue on, the majority of the time we will check that for them," Austin said. "The average consumer doesn't know where to check for recalls or how to find out if their car even fits that recall that they have been sent in the mail."

Jacob Wehner said he has a recall on his 2001 Silverado, but he hasn't taken his car into the shop to get it fixed.

"I've had problems with it," Wehner said. "So I think it's just more of the fact that you just don't want to have to deal with it ... Just something you set aside, you don't really worry about it too much."

Austin hopes drivers will use the website to become more informed about their vehicles.

"In our industry, in any industry for that matter, an educated consumer makes a good consumer."

Austin said taking care of your car is important when it comes to safety.

"Our car is our number one safety item," Austin said. "Our family is transported in that; our wives and children and husbands. That being said it's our responsibility to keep our vehicle not just for us but for all the other people on the road also."
The new search tool will contain 15 years worth of recall data.

The recall information is dependent on the manufacturer conducting the recall.

NHTSA does not record VIN information or results provided through the VIN lookup tool.
