Some aren't giving up hope that the wooden roller coaster can still be saved. They said they believe it should be designated a landmark or engineering marvel.
"It's role in film, particularly when we're in the entertainment industry here in Southern California and in Hollywood, it's been in so many films, so many movies. It's almost like we're losing a Hollywood icon," Donald Patti, organizer of Save Colossus, a group rallying to save the attraction, said.
According to the Save Colossus website, the roller coaster was featured in films, TV shows and commercials, including "National Lampoon’s Vacation," "Step By Step," "Doogie Howser, M.D.," "The A-Team" and "Wonder Woman."
"[Colossus] is a living memorial to John Candy and the humor he brought to all of us," the website stated. The group also said the roller coaster, at its opening, set records for height, speed and total lumber used.
