Vandals strike southern IL cemetery

Posted: Updated:
UNION COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

Vandalism to a southern Illinois cemetery has volunteers ready to roll up their sleeves to make things right again, and much of the effort involves the Union County highway department.

Workers at the Union County Highway Department plan to donate a Saturday or two to right a wrong done by vandals in a rural cemetery.

At the progress cemetery several tombstones have been toppled.

This isn't the first time the graveyard has been targeted, but Engineer Kevin Grammar says it may be the most damage vandals have ever done.

"We've had some smaller stones that we've been able to put back up with manpower in the past," Highway Engineer Kevin Grammar said. "But these particular stones are going to require equipment to put them back in place."

Grammer says some of the stones weigh as much as 4,000 pounds.

That's why he recently went to the county commissioners to ask for permission to use county equipment and fuel to help the volunteers lift the stones.

Two monument companies plan to donate their expertise to help re-set the stones.

Grammer says he's not exactly sure when this will happen, as they have to work around the monument companies' schedule.

Soon, those stones will be back up, honoring the memory of those resting in peace in progress cemetery.
