DELTA, MO (KFVS) -

Fire crews were called to the scene of a massive hay bale fire south of Delta, Missouri.

There were around 200 round bales of hay on fire. The hay was wrapped in a plastic covering.

The fire happened in the 1800 block of County Road 261, off of Highway 25 in Cape Girardeau County.

Whitewater, Advance, Gordonville and Delta Fire Departments were on the scene. Stoddard County ambulance was on standby.

The fire came close to a metal pole barn. White smoke could be seen around the area.

The hay's owner said he checked the hay this morning, and everything was fine.

There is no word yet on how the fire started.

Fire crews say they will let the hay burn down. They are watering around the edges of the hay so the fire won't spread.
