Cape Girardeau police investigating 3 open homicide cases

Posted: Updated:
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Sunday night's double homicide marks the third open homicide investigation for the Cape Girardeau Police Department at one time.

"We can go a whole year with out a homicide, or we can have one," said Sergeant Jason Selzer with Cape PD. "It's very unusual for us to have multiple open homicide investigations that haven't been solved."

The latest killings happened in what neighbors call a normally quiet neighborhood.

"It was a real panic," Rev. Byron Bonner said. "We were trying to stay as far away as possible."

The shooting left 20-year-old Detavian Richardson and 28-year-old Zatrun Twiggs dead.

Some community members are trying to take a stand against the violence.

"They want a solution to the problem but no one wants to do the solution," said Rev. Joseph Cotton, pastor at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

Cotton along with other pastors in the area met with Cape Girardeau police this spring to try and come up with a better solution to handling crime in the area.

"If you stand your ground for anything, non-violence is what you should stand up for," said Cotton.

Cape police are asking for much the same.

"There's some trust issues there," said Selzer. "Not everybody wants to share what they know with us."

For people living near where crimes are occurring they say there's not much else they can do.

"It's a uncommon thing, we're just praying," said Bonner.
