(VATICAN TV/CNN) - Pope Francis has called for a cease-fire in the Middle East.
The pope prayed with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli President Shimon Peres at the Vatican in June.
The leaders committed themselves to the quest for peace during the visit, but violence in the region has escalated since then.
Before the Sunday Angelus prayer, Pope Francis said he does not believe their meeting was a waste of time.
He said prayer is a powerful weapon against evil.
