Newburgh man drowns in Ohio River

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Rescue crews recovered the body of a Newburgh man who drowned in the Ohio River early Saturday morning.

The Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office say 52-year-old Ernest Weaver drowned in the Ohio River at Nu Plaza Yacht Club around 1:00 a.m.

Sheriff Dave Wedding says Weaver was trying to tie his boat to the dock when he lost his balance and fell into the river.

Wedding says Weaver was among a group of people when it happened.

Wedding says one man in the group considered diving in after Weaver but thought better of it since the water was too dark and murky.

Wedding says Weaver didn't resurface and that a dive team found Weaver's body 3.5 hours later.

"Over the past years we have had several people drown in and around the Dogtown boat ramp area," says Wedding. "We've had a couple people that have had boating accidents. So, please use good common sense. If you're not a good swimmer, wear a floatation device."

The Coroner's Office says Weaver likely drowned because he wasn't a strong swimmer.

Both Wedding and the Coroner's Office say Weaver may have his hit his head when he fell.

The Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office says an autopsy on 52-year-old Ernest Weaver did not indicate why he fell and did not show any blunt force trauma to his head.

Authorities are now waiting on toxicology results  to show if alcohol or any other substances played a role.

Perry Township Fire Department and Marrs Township Fire Department both assisted in the rescue.

Those results should be back in about 3 to 4 weeks.
