AG Koster backs Missouri right-to-farm measure

Posted: Updated:

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster is supporting an August ballot measure that would insert a right to farm in the state constitution.

Koster announced his support for the amendment Wednesday at the Missouri Farm Bureau headquarters. He said the amendment is necessary to guard against arbitrary policies limiting the way farmers can raise livestock and crops and to protect against unreasonable uses of eminent domain.

As attorney general, Koster is responsible for defending challenges to state laws and regulations.

Opponents of the ballot measure have suggested it could be cited by corporate livestock farms to try to escape regulations on pollution and nuisances. But Koster said he didn't think the amendment would affect the state's current regulations on confined animal operations.
