CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

The RNC Site Selection Committee announced Cleveland will be their recommendation to host the 2016 Republican National Convention. The announcement came down just before noon.

Now that a decision has been made, the RNC and Cleveland will enter into exclusive negotiations on key details for the 2016 convention.

The Site Selection Committee's recommendation will be presented to the full Republican National Committee when they meet in Chicago next month.

After the announcement was made, Site Selection Chairwoman Enid Mickelsen and RNC Chairman Reince Priebus issued the following statements:

"It's my honor to announce Cleveland as the Site Selection Committee's recommendation to host the 2016 Republican National Convention," said Site Selection Chairwoman Enid Mickelsen. "Cleveland is a phenomenal city, and I can't think of a better place to showcase our party and our nominee in 2016. This committee was tasked with difficult decisions and was presented with several strong options to host our convention. I'm confident Cleveland is the right pick for our next national convention. Cleveland has demonstrated they have the commitment, energy, and terrific facilities to help us deliver a history-making Republican convention. I extend my deepest gratitude to Dallas. Dallas is a world class city with wonderful venues and fantastic people and I'm certain they'll make a great host for our party in the future. The Dallas team were excellent ambassadors for their city and showed both the committee and the RNC all the wonderful things the city has to offer."

"A Cleveland convention offers our party a great steppingstone to the White House in 2016, and I'm encouraged by the committee's recommendation.  The team from Cleveland has gone above and beyond the call of duty and I think they're representative of a city eager to show the country all the fantastic things they have to offer.  The RNC set a new standard for conventions during this process. Not only will the convention be held earlier in 2016, but there are also substantial guarantees in place for funding that put us well ahead of previous conventions and will give our nominee the best opportunity to succeed," added RNC Chairman Reince Priebus. "I also want to thank Dallas. The hospitality shown by their city, their team and the Republican community in Dallas has been tremendous."

Cleveland made an aggressive pitch to the Site Selection Committee when they visited last month. RNC advisers returned to the city just last week to look over technical aspects.

"Cleveland is ready. You're missing something here. And for the GOP and the DC power brokers to say, 'We checked it out. We vetted it and there's something amazing going on,'" said Richey Piiparinen, an expert of urban affairs, growth and cultural trends in Cleveland.

According to Piiparinen, this positive perception change may even have a bigger impact than the convention itself.

"I think the perception of Cleveland as up and coming, as rejuvenating, as a city that's not dead, is huge for the city, because there's going to be momentum, a lot of investment flowing back into the Rust Belt heartland," said Piiparinen.

Cleveland's selection is contingent on several things happening between now and August:

-Make sure there are adequate hotel rooms

-Make sure a June or July date will not conflict with sporting events

-Most importantly: Money.

Security alone will cost tens of millions of dollars. Federal law enforcement agencies have put out hundreds of pages of documents on what police should do. From what we've seen at other conventions, city, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies will have to control crowds, the threat of terrorism protestors, not to mention, the unexpected. Expect Cleveland Police, sheriff's deputies, state patrols, and the feds to team up with hi-tech equipment to keep convention crowds safe.

The host city will need upwards of $60 million on hand. Cleveland says it has $30 million so far. With 50,000 visitors bringing hundreds of millions of dollars into the city, leaders believe it is a good investment that will pay rich dividends.

If all the pieces fall into place, the August vote should be a simple formality.

Meantime, Democratic National Committee officials begin visits next week. Cleveland remains on that list, as well. They are slated to be in town August 4-5.

This isn't the first time Cleveland has hosted the convention. Northeast Ohio hosted the Republicans back in 1924 and 1936 in the Public Auditorium. At the time, Cleveland was the nation's sixth largest city with a population of almost 800,000 people.
