RUMFORD, ME (WGME/CNN) - Severe thunderstorms rolled through western Maine on Wednesday.

The torrential downpours caused flash flooding and washed out several roads.

“The winds came in pretty hard and the rain was going in every direction,” Gordon Phillips said. “Lightning was hitting one right after the other. It was just steady, and the thunder was right there too. It was pretty intense.”

The storms knocked out electricity to thousands of residents. Some have been told they'll be without power for a week.
