CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago police officers seized more than 3,200 firearms during the first half of the year.

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy made the announcement Tuesday. He says the number shows the need for "stronger laws to keep illegal guns off" the city's streets and "to punish the dangerous criminals carrying them."

The Police Department says in a news release that officers in Chicago recover more illegal firearms than police in any other city in the nation. And McCarthy says they're doing that without a state law mandating significant jail time for criminals carrying guns illegally.

In one case last week, the department says, officers in the Englewood neighborhood found a convicted felon in a park with a loaded semi-automatic firearm. Police say his arrest resulted in six different criminal charges.
